28mm Sp'Ork Trompa - my first laser-cut design

Okay, the title is a little misleading -- I haven't actually gotten this made yet because I'm still trying to figure out how to get this from Sketchup to an SVG or EPS file, and then I have to figure out where to get it made (besides Ponoko, which has one of the worst-organized websites known to modern man).  But still, this project should work once I get it cut and assembled!

I recently succumbed to the temptation to get back into Warhammer 40K, a game I haven't played since George H. W. Bush was president (seriously, I'm not kidding).  Really, it was a combination of "Gee, all my friends are playing it" and "Wow, here's a garage sale that has a small fortune of Orks for a pittance."  Orks have been my favorite race since I first cracked open Rogue Trader back in the dim days of 1988, and I still love them for the sheer breadth of scratchbuilding possibilities they represent.

Thus, inspired by the many cool MDF models available over at miniaturescenery.com, and also by this incredible scratchbuilt Stompa on CMON, I decided to try designing my own Ork walker.  Ladies and gentlemen, and my personal friends, I give you the Sp'Ork Trompa.

This build will obviously require some finishing touches, such as rivets (lots of 'em), armor patches, and Ork glyphs, but the core structure is there.  Oh, one additional thing -- the Gatling will require six lengths of styrene rod or brass tube, specifically 8mm diameter by 80mm length.

This first pic shows a true-to-size comparison with the $115 Stompa model kit from Games Workshop.

I inserted a silhouette of an Ork Boy with a rough height of 32mm, since Orks' heights are highly variable.

An "unpainted" version so you can see the seams where the parts meet:
 And now, the component parts.

Once I can figure out how to get this cut, I'll post an unboxing, assembly, and painting update.

  1. Very , Very Orky Javelin... Kudos
Would look superb next to my ( if it were to be made in 15mm ) ork scratchbuilds.
Can they be cut in card so as to be scaled to 15mm ?

    See my ork builds...

  2. Maybe you saw this already but you can see 1 way of how to get svgs from SketchUp here - http://www.instructables.com/id/SketchUp-Inkscape-and-Ponoko-Laser-Cutting/

    Hope that helps.
